About This Place

Sugar Freak is a vibrant Creole, Cajun, and Southern restaurant nestled in the heart of Astoria, NY. This charming eatery offers an authentic taste of Louisiana right in Queens, skillfully blending bold flavors with a welcoming atmosphere that keeps guests coming back for more.

Step inside Sugar Freak and you’ll immediately notice its warm and inviting ambiance. The wood-accented interior, paired with subtle nautical-themed décor, creates an “I’m sailing away” sensation, transporting diners straight to the bayous and coastlines of the South. The thoughtfully curated space is cozy yet lively, making it the perfect spot for brunch with friends, family dinners, or even a casual date. Whether you choose to dine indoors or enjoy the fresh air outside, the restaurant’s inviting vibe and upbeat background music complement every meal beautifully.

The menu at Sugar Freak reads like a love letter to Southern comfort food with a distinctly Louisiana twist. Start your culinary journey with their standout appetizers: the Hushpuppies Deep-Fried Cornbread served with a uniquely sweet and spicy condensed milk sauce is a crispy, golden bite that perfectly balances sweet and heat. Another favorite, the Beignet Sliders, feature fluffy, pillowy beignets paired with your choice of tender chicken or beef, topped with crunchy coleslaw and a horseradish mayo that adds just the right amount of kick. If you’re in the mood for a little spice, the Pop Okra with spicy mayo dipping sauce delivers a delightful crunch with every bite.

For heartier fare, the po’ boys are must-tries. Whether you opt for the Fried Shrimp Po’ Boy or the Blackened Catfish Po’ Boy, each sandwich is loaded with fresh, crisp lettuce, ripe tomatoes, pickles, and creamy coleslaw, all nestled in perfectly toasted bread and accompanied by a side of crispy fries. The generous portions and harmony of textures make these sandwiches a crowd-pleaser.

Dive deeper into the Louisiana specialties if you want an explosion of Southern flavors on your plate. The Jambalaya features perfectly seasoned rice simmered with chicken and andouille sausage, swimming in a spicy Creole tomato gravy and crowned with blackened chicken and smoked sausage—smoky, spicy, and deeply satisfying. For seafood lovers, the Seafood Jambalaya raises the stakes with fresh clams, mussels, shrimp, and your choice of blackened or fried catfish, creating a seafood symphony that sings of the Gulf Coast. Not to be missed is the Crawfish Étouffée, a rich, spicy Creole stew that envelops tender crawfish in a luscious, thick sauce.

Guests frequently laud Sugar Freak’s upbeat yet laid-back vibe. One happy diner described it as a "hidden gem" in New York, praising the restaurant for serving the best Cajun and Creole comfort food outside Louisiana. The team's hospitality shines through, with attentive staff offering thoughtful touches like high chairs for families and quick, friendly service even during the peak of a bustling weekend.

While some find it slightly on the pricier side for classic Cajun fare, most agree the flavor and quality of the ingredients justify the experience. The combination of genuine Southern hospitality, warm ambiance, and expertly crafted dishes ensures that each visit feels memorable.

Whether you’re craving a taste of authentic jambalaya, a crispy po’ boy, or love the idea of brunch with beignet sliders and handcrafted cocktails, Sugar Freak is a must-visit for anyone looking to savor the rich culinary heritage of the American South in a modern, relaxed setting.

Stopped by on a Saturday afternoon, with a name like “Sugar Freak” it was hard not to. The inside of the restaurant gives you almost a “I’m sailing away” feel, the wood compliments the theme plus the cute but not overly done decor makes it a great spot for pictures. I ordered a shrimp basket, an espresso martini, and my partner tried the chicken basket and a fruity cocktail. We also got a side of the 4 types of cheese Mac and cheese (they have plenty to choose from). Food was delicious, I can definitely compare it to really good home style Louisiana food. If you like kennedys, chicken this spot out. Definitely way better. The drinks? 10/10. Smooth and strong. Fast and respectful service, which I really appreciated. If you’re in Astoria, and need some good seafood, even a little pick me up just to try, check out Sugar Freak! Will definitely be back for a boil. Thank you for a wonderful experience.

Sugar Freak feels like a hidden gem in New York. It serves the best Cajun/Creole comfort food outside of Louisiana. My family absolutely loved everything we ordered. I especially recommend the beignet sliders! They also serve vegan chicken which tastes like the real deal. I cannot wait to go back next time we visit Astoria.

A Southern Seafood place cooking Louisiana Style. The place has indoor and outdoor seating. They played good music. They even have an ATM machine inside by the bathroom. The place was packed, and the food came out quickly. It’s very artistic looking and the bathroom and the old chain flush option. My family shared a few options that was really delicious. Deviled eggs with crab meat on top,Hush Puppies,it’s corn bread that comes with a milk dipping sauce,Seafood Jambalaya. It just had the right spice on it. Crab Cake Benedict and deep fried oysters.

The food was great! We had chick&waffle and seafood jambalaya, they were both delicious. The staff was very kind and nice, they offer us high chair before we asked. The atmosphere was great and we love the decoration and the design of the store, very well curated! Highly recommend this restaurant and will be back soon! We didn’t make reservation in advance but I think for dinner hour you might need to do so, because it was almost full house during lunch hour in weekend today.

Food was pretty good, a bit overpriced for Cajun food. I really liked the blackened fish but the shrimp was just okay. Staff was hesitant to seat us which was weird because there was a table right next to us. Work on better customer service!

This place is really a league of its own and deserves more than 5 stars. The food here is fantastic and flavorful. Its hard to find quality Creole and Lousiana food in NYC and this place more than delivers. Ive come here multiple times and every dish is interesting and filling. The prices are a bit high, but I think it is worth it for the quality and quantity that you get.

Came here for brunch one day, all I can say is YUM! I will definitely be back here when I am craving some homey Southern food. We ordered the sugar freak breakfast and chicken and waffle beignet. Everything was spot on! I wasn't sure what to expect from the waffle beignet but it was delicious. If you have a sweet tooth, this is definitely for you! Staff was friendly, can't wait to come back.

Enjoyed the comfort food in this place the spot was sort of empty which was surprising but who cares the food was excellent from the Waffles to the sliders everything was super flavorful. The decor was cool and the service was top notch. We are from out of town and in the varieties of place you could go to in Astoria this place has a place in our hearts we will be back.
